THE FASCINATION
OF A REVOLUTIONARY NEW
IDEA

In February 1993 René Quinting came up with the idea of designing a watch that was completely see-through from the dial to the back – a fascinating idea that has occupied the greatest minds in the watchmaking profession for more than 100 years. So it was that a succession of finely crafted skeleton-watches was born, each one with a mechanism more transparent than the last, edging ever closer to this grand goal. None, however, achieved total movement transparency. |

It soon became clear in the course of the development work that conventional watch-making materials and processes were of no use. For one thing, achieving a completely seethrough watch core first required a special process in which 12 layers of sapphire crystal are metallised and given an antireflection coating. |

The completely new manufacturing technology was a huge challenge, and not just for the budding young QUINTING corporation. It was just as much of a tall order for the large number of componentry suppliers, who found themselves faced with a completely new technology. With the exception of 7 parts, including the hands, all the remaining QUINTING components, numbering about 230, and 26 sub-assemblies are manufactured exclusively for this world-first chronograph. |
